Interesting characters and a fascinating setting: The White House, focusing on the kitchen. Our heroine, Olivia aka Ollie, is a talented assistant chef with the opportunity to be executive chef. Her competitor is an obnoxious TV host. Most of the kitchen staff is supporting her, but there are a few bad apples trying to spoil her chance. That's the set-up, but there are other complications--The Chameleon, an assassin--and a peace conference. Who's the target? Oh, and Olllie's chance encounter with a man on the White House lawn; it's a good thing she had that frying pan. Now she has to deal with the Secret Service, including an agent, her boyfriend, Tom, who wants her to stay in her place: the kitchen.So, Ollie is juggling her work in the kitchen--which includes preparing state dinners, the President's breakfast, and dealing with the TV host and her camera crew; her relationship with Tom; wondering about her chance to be executive chef; and becoming the target of The Chameleon, whom only she can identify.The story has a plot that reflects the state of the world and that takes us into the White House kitchen with lots of fascinating background, dishes, and recipes. I enjoyed that look behind the scenes and the relationships of those working in the kitchen and elsewhere. There's even a visit to Camp David--a much better name than Shangri-La, in my opinion (historical reference).Tom was not my favorite character, btw. After reading another series by Julie Hyzy I thought I would give this one a try. I really like the White House kitchen setting & all the interesting "behind the scenes" information. The protagonist, Ollie, a white house chef, is likable but not too sure about her so called secret service boyfriend. The things that frustrated me were that she was the only person who could identify an assassin (who was also stalking her) but she was on her own without protection & that I would have liked to see her stand up for herself a little more. I was a bit confused that she would pop a tape into her "VCR" but yet everyone had cell phones & texting. ?Overall I enjoyed book 1& I am looking forward to the story unfolding as I move on to book 2.
