Ebook About
In this highly atmospheric mystery, Ruth Galloway—described by Louise Penny as “a captivating amateur sleuth”—and DI Nelson have their summer vacations horribly disrupted by a murder in a medieval Italian town where dark secrets are buried as deep as bones. It’s not often that you’re called to the Italian countryside on business, so when archaeologist Angelo Morelli asks for Ruth Galloway’s help identifying bones found in picturesque Fontana Liri, she jumps at the chance to go, bringing her daughter along for a working vacation. Upon arriving, she hears murmurs of Fontana Liri’s strong resistance movement during World War II, and senses the townspeople have a deeply buried secret. But how could that connect to the ancient remains she’s been studying?   Just as she’s getting her footing in the dig, DCI Nelson appears, unexpectedly and for no clear reason. When Ruth’s findings lead them to a modern-day murder, their holidays are both turned upside down, as they race to find out what darkness is lurking in this seemingly peaceful town.

Book The Dark Angel (Ruth Galloway Mysteries Book 10) Review :

Nobody does a more delightful job of mixing love affairs, ominous happenings, murder, and heroics than Elly Griffiths. Her Dr. Ruth Galloway mysteries are totally absorbing and addictive, and The Dark Angel keeps up the irresistible momentum of the series.Ruth goes to Italy to consult with another archeologist and is drawn into a murder case. Back home in Norfolk, violence also enfolds, as a murderer on parole stalks the various cops who put him away. In both settings, the passionate entanglements among Ruth, her policeman lover Nelson, his wife Michelle, and her lover Tim increase in complexity and intensity. These two setting and narratives alternate throughout The Dark Angel, the chapters often ending with a dramatic cliffhanger. The reader is constantly expecting the worst (justifiably), while at the same time being titillated by the flourishing of illicit love and guilt on all sides.I thought I wouldn’t like any setting as well as Norfolk with its spooky salt marshes. But the walled hilltop town where Ruth and her entourage stay is fascinating. The past is still present to the inhabitants. It’s as if the Nazis and even the Roman conquerors have just left. Generations of townspeople have lived here through dreadful experiences, and resentments have been simmering for generations.I read The Dark Angel obsessively, only breaking reluctantly at night for sleep. A lot of questions were answered from the last book. I can barely wait for the next book to answer more. I want this series to go on forever. So does my husband. So does my next-door neighbor.
I love Ruth Galloway's character and those of the people who surround her, and I did like this book. One of the reasons we all love Ruth so much is that she is dealing with bones and mysteries, while her tangled love life and those of the people around her are woven deftly into the plot.First the good stuff -- Ruth, Shona, and their kids travel to Italy ostensibly to help a fellow archaeologist with whom Ruth had a brief affair, but somehow she gets tangled up with a very odd mystery concerning a Roman skeleton. Suddenly, things begin to happen and she is in the thick of a WWII Italian partisan/traitor mystery which casts a long shadow over her mini vacation. Running parallel to this back in the UK is the release of a murderer from prison who may or may not have Nelson in his sights. Relationships are strained, resentment and resignation simmer, and in the end, the two seemingly disparate plot directions cross for a very dramatic ending.Unfortunately (at least for me), the book was set in Italy! It is both a positive and negative part of this story because although she gets to travel outside her comfort zone with her daughter, she also seems to be drifting from scene to scene rather than being involved with her actual profession : archaeology. Also, this book was heavy on the relationships plotting and even though Ruth seems to be knee deep in bones in the beginning of the book, the potential for some really fascinating archaeological investigations by Ruth are swept aside to pursue her troubled love live. Her descriptions of the Italian town are great but the moody setting of her previous books was shunted aside. I for one love the author's moody descriptions of windswept beaches, chilly castle ruins, and the British history which make this series such fun to read and am unsure why Ruth went to Italy unless it was merely to put space between her and Nelson. However, she could have gone to Ireland or even Norway for DNA testing on a Viking burial if she needed distance, and Italy was just too different and too odd a destination for me, unfortunately.I love this series; but this book not so much. I gave 4 stars because the characterizations were good and it resolved a lot of issues over the course of the book. And yes, I cannot wait for the next one which I hope comes out sooner rather than later!
