By the neck was my first ever book I read of this author, I just had to read the second , and I was not let down.Cannot wait to read another of W.W. Johnstone books. Rollie “Stoneface” Finnegan is an ex-Pinkerton agent who now resides in Idaho country and runs a saloon along with his partner named Pops. Stoneface is still recovering from a harrowing experience with a gang hired to track down and eliminate him. Pops is a quiet man who resides with Rollie in the back of their saloon and helps Stoneface track down villains when he isn’t helping in the Last Drop Saloon.In the novel, there are two plots that are running parallel throughout. On the one hand, there is a man who comes to Idaho to take his vengeance out on Finnegan. On the other hand, there is a gang of men who are robbing the miners while wearing sacks with two holes for eyes and hiding in the hills around the growing town. Some of the characters who readers met in the first book, By the Neck, like Chauncey who is the Mayor of Boar Gulch, or Nosey who works at the saloon, make appearances.Be prepared when you begin reading to sit for a spell as this book starts right off with high octane action and that never lets up until the very end. When I finished the book, I was simply amazed at the constant movement in the story. The mystery builds with each plot line of who is going to discover who is after the miners, trying to take everything they own as well as how a thespian actor who has so much going for him can blame another for the actions he committed.The town of Boar Gulch in the tale is a booming mining town where real law has yet to appear, which is why the town folk look to Stoneface and Pops to maintain order. The author does a superb job of cluing readers in on important action that happened in the first book, which helps understand the nuances of book two.
